Generously sponsored by

an-vision travel scholarship

In 2013, the ISVO – in partnership with Ingeborg Fromberg – initiated a travel scholarship program.  Since then, over 20 up-and-coming ophthalmologists have benefited from this generous sponsorship.  We have had scholars from 4 continents (see red pins on map) attend centers of excellence on 3 continents (see blue pins on map).

After a hiatus during the COVID pandemic, the ISVO is delighted to announce a reinvigoration of this program – again generously supported by an-vision. Beginning in 2023, we have again been able to award 2-3 scholarships per year to deserving aspiring ophthalmology trainees all around the world to visit an international centre of ophthalmic excellence. The scholarship provides funding for tuition, travel, and subsistence costs up to $2500 USD per person. The one-month training is expected to be completed within 12 months of award of the scholarship.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, each awardee will also receive a complimentary one-year subscription to the journal Veterinary Ophthalmology.

The scholarship is open to any veterinarian who is not currently enrolled in an official ophthalmology residency training program and who is a regular or institutional member of the ISVO.  Successful applicants have previously tended to be those who otherwise lack access to advanced practices in the field.  Applicants must contact prospective host institutions to investigate their willingness to host a traveling scholar, and a statement from the host ophthalmologist confirming this must be included as part of the application.  Selection of the successful applicant will be made by members of the ISVO Executive Committee and any decision will be final. Previously unsuccessful applicants are welcome to reapply. A call for applications comes out twice per year – typically around April/May and August/September.

A one-page report detailing what has been learned during the externship and your future goals is expected within one month of completing the externship. Prior individuals who have been awarded this scholarship, and their stories can be found here.

Please check back here regularly. Consider preparing the following material in readiness for your application:

Applications must be submitted online and include:

  1. A curriculum vitae
  2. A plan of the study to be undertaken, including a short statement justifying the applicant’s need for funding
  3. A letter from the ophthalmologist at the host institution supporting your application
