Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Ophthalmology Interim Meeting

Location: Beautiful Manly, Sydney

Overview: Join us in the picturesque coastal setting of Manly, Sydney, for an exciting and detailed expedition into genetic and hereditary eye disease and its treatments.

Guest speaker: Dr Gustavo Aguirre is a Professor of Medical Genetics and Ophthalmology at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, and is a world-renowned Veterinary Ophthalmologist with vast experience in the world of ophthalmic genetics. His research surrounds dog models of inherited eye and retinal degeneration with his work focusing on developing gene-based therapies for translational applications. We are thrilled to have him as our invited speaker for the ANZCVS Ophthalmology interim chapter meeting.

Sunday 13th October

Monday 14th October – Day 1

  • 8.30-9.30 Registration, Manly Pacific hotel
  • 9.30-10:30 – Lecture 1 – ‘Conformation, conformation, conformation – that is the problem; simple approaches for the control of these diseases’
  • 10.30-11.00 – coffee break
  • 11:00-12.30 – Lecture 2 – ‘Inherited disease of the cornea, iris and lens – for some, genetics is not as simple as we have been led to believe Part I’
  • 12.30-14:00 – Lunch
  • 14:00 -16:00 Lecture 3 – ‘Inherited disease of the cornea, iris and lens – for some, genetics is not as simple as we have been led to believe Part II’
  • 18:30 – Chapter dinner – Bistro Manly

Tuesday 15th October – Day 2

  • 9.30-10:30 – Lecture 4 – ‘Acquired and inherited retinal diseases in dogs – some confusion and diagnostic challenges’
  • 10.30-11.15 – coffee break
  • 11:15-12.30 – Lecture 5 – ‘Inherited outer retinal (RPE-Photoreceptor complex) disease – new and old disease, many breeds’
  • 12.30-14:00 – Lunch
  • 14:00 -15:15 Lecture 6 – ‘Treatment of inherited retinal diseases – photochemical, regenerative (cell) and gene therapy’
  • 16:00 – Departure drinks
