In 2013, the ISVO initiated a travel scholarship program that – since then – has helped over 25 up-and-coming ophthalmologists to realize a dream. With the help of our sponsors over the years, the ISVO has had scholars from 5 continents (see red pins on map) attend centers of excellence on 3 continents (see blue pins on map).

Since its inception, this program has enjoyed generous sponsorship from a number of sponsors all of whom shared the ISVO’s global passion for advancing knowledge and opportunities for veterinarians interested in ophthalmology.
Dômes Pharma is committed to providing veterinarians, nurses, and pet owners with:
- An extensive range of innovative ophthalmic products, from daily care and prevention (eye cleanser, lubricants, feed supplements) to diagnostics (dye) and therapeutics (corneal healing, antibiotics…)
- The scientific and technical expertise of its vet teams
- A broad range of services, including disease management guidelines written collaboratively with specialists and innovative educational experiences.
Dômes Pharma mission is brought alive through this scholarship:
“(Re)inventing, with passion and humanity, solutions for the health and well-being of pets, for more complicity and a better life.”

Scholarship Logistics
Typically, the ISVO awards 2 or 3 scholarships per year to deserving aspiring ophthalmology trainees all around the world to visit an international center of ophthalmic excellence. The scholarship provides funding for tuition, travel, and subsistence costs up to $2500 USD per person. The one-month training is expected to be completed within 12 months of award of the scholarship.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, each awardee also receives a complimentary one-year subscription to the journal Veterinary Ophthalmology.

The scholarship is open to any veterinarian who is not currently enrolled in an official ophthalmology residency training program and who is a regular or institutional member of the ISVO. Successful applicants have previously tended to be those who otherwise lack access to advanced practices in the field. Applicants must contact prospective host institutions to investigate their willingness to host a traveling scholar, and a statement from the host ophthalmologist confirming this must be included as part of the application. Selection of the successful applicant will be made by members of the ISVO Executive Committee and any decision will be final. Previously unsuccessful applicants are welcome to reapply. A call for applications comes out twice per year – typically around April/May and August/September.
A one-page report detailing what has been learned during the externship and your future goals is expected within one month of completing the externship. Prior individuals who have been awarded this scholarship, and their stories can be found here.
The ISVO typically calls for applications for this scholarship twice yearly. Please check back here regularly and watch our Instagram feed for further information.
