Dr. Gil Ben-Shlomo joined the ISVO as our webmaster and social media manager in 2012; a time when the ISVO had absolutely no digital presence. As such, he built from the ground up, the website and Facebook page that continue to serve our international community so well today. He joined the ISVO Board in 2015 and became our President in 2019. Gil is remembered as a passionate educator and role model, especially for those from countries where veterinary ophthalmology is still in its more foundational stages. More information on the amazing work Gil did is available in the 2020(3) issue of The Globe which was dedicated to his achievements in international veterinary ophthalmology.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Icare Finland – manufacturers of the TONOVET – the ISVO – is able to offer a bursary in Dr. Ben-Shlomo’s name to support a deserving individual’s attendance at the ACVO Basic Science Course (BSC). For 30 years, this course has furthered the understanding of basic scientific principles, pathophysiology of diseases, and principles and applications of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in veterinary and comparative ophthalmology and remains the premier such course in the world. The bursary will provide USD $2,000 to cover the registration fee for one person who has already or will register for the BSC.
Kirsi Kulven (Global Veterinary Business Line Director of Icare Finland) recalls the privilege of working with Dr. Ben-Shlomo, whose expertise and dedication to veterinary ophthalmology were invaluable to her team. His contributions significantly enhanced Icare’s understanding of the needs and wants of veterinarians, allowing them to develop more effective and user-friendly products designed especially for animal eyes. His willingness to share knowledge and mentor so many others around the world was a testament to his commitment to the global veterinary ophthalmology community.
In accordance with Gil’s history of supporting those with fewer vocational opportunities in comparative ophthalmology, the selection criteria will include an assessment of the applicant’s need and the impact that attendance at the BSC will have on the individual and their career path. Although veterinarians currently in a residency training program are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to those for whom residency training is not possible or opportunities are limited. Full application details are available here.
The ISVO hopes to continue to offer this bursary annually. Therefore, we encourage donations toward this bursary in Dr. Gil Ben-Shlomo’s name. If you are in a position to support this effort, please make your donation here. Every dollar counts!
Please join the ISVO in thanking Icare Finland (whose TONOVET has aided so many veterinary ophthalmologists in their career path) for their generous sponsorship of this bursary, Dr. Ben-Shlomo’s wife Anna and daughters Ronni and Noam for conceiving of its need, and others whose generosity is helping to ensure that it may be continued. We believe that this is a very fitting tribute to Dr. Gil Ben-Shlomo and hope you will join us in this venture
